Shangri La Botanical Gardens

Aqua Engineering assisted the project team in revitalizing Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Natures Center to provide a unique and memorable learning experience for visitors. Shangri La is owned and operated by the Nelda C. and H.J. Stark Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve and enrich the quality of life in southeast Texas by assisting education, the arts and health and human services. In addition to its contribution to the community, the project is LEED® Platinum certified, which certifies that the design and construction of Shangri La reached the highest “green” building and performance measures. This is the first project in the state of Texas and the fiftieth project in the world to receive the highest certification awarded by the US Green Building Committee (USGBC) for new construction.

Some of the equipment specified for the irrigation system complied with requirements of the Water Efficiency Credit 1.1 under LEED. Water for irrigation is supplied by harvested water from structured rooftops that is held in cisterns. The water from the cisterns is filtered and pumped into the irrigation system serving this site. Our engineers also provided irrigation design services for the historic garden complex.
